Accepted Materials for Curbside Recycling

  • Clean and dry plastic bottles, jugs, jars, and tubs
  • Aluminum and steel cans
  • Paper (newspapers, magazines, office paper, etc.)
  • Cardboard (flattened)



Common Recycling Myths – Busted

  • Myth: Most people recycle everything they can.
     
    Fact: Without recycling bins in multiple rooms, many recyclables get thrown away. Household commitment is key.
  • Myth: If it has the recycling arrows symbol, it’s recyclable.
     
    Fact: Not always. Recycle by shape, not symbol—stick to bottles, jugs, jars, and tubs.
  • Myth: Everything gets sorted anyway, so just toss it in.
     
    Fact: Incorrect items slow the process, raise costs, and cause safety issues. When in doubt, throw it out.
  • Myth: Recyclables must be squeaky clean.
     
    Fact: A quick rinse is enough. Items should be clean, dry, and free of most food, but not spotless.
  • Myth: Aerosol cans are recyclable everywhere.
     
    Fact: Only empty and dry cans are typically accepted—without the cap. Always check your local rules.
  • Myth: Large plastic items like hoses or toys can go in the bin.
     
    Fact: Unless it’s a bottle, can, paper, or cardboard, it likely doesn’t belong. Look for special disposal options.
  • Myth: All glass bottles and jars are recyclable.
     
    Fact: Nashville's material recovery facility does not accept glass at this time.
